With schools increasingly becoming mobile-phone-free by default, what role can mobile technology still play in learning outside the classroom?
Join Dr Graham French for an engaging session exploring how phones, wearable technology and other digital tools can be used purposefully to enhance learning outside the classroom (LOtC) experiences. From field enquiry, mapping and citizen science to creative documentation, reflection, language learning and accessibility, we’ll consider how providers can make the most of the technology that learners already have in their pockets.
The session will also explore the challenges that come with using mobile technology, including distraction, safeguarding, consent, privacy and unequal access. Rather than asking whether technology is simply ‘good’ or ‘bad’ for LOtC, Graham will consider how it can shape attention, experience, learning and relationships with place.
You’ll leave with a practical information to help you decide when mobile technology can enrich an LOtC experience, when it may get in the way, and how providers and schools can work together to plan its use effectively.
Dr Graham French has researched mobile and wearable technologies in outdoor and adventure education for over a decade. His work explores the relationship between technology, LOtC experiences and learning, considering not only the potential benefits but also the wider implications for attention, experience, ethics and relationships with place.
