CLOtC National Conference 2025

Quotes from the CLOtC National Conference 2024…

Creating connections, engaging all, enriching lives

Wednesday 12th November 2025, Royal Armouries Museum, Leeds

Learning outside the classroom (LOtC) offers unlimited opportunities to create meaningful, inclusive experiences for all —regardless of ability, gender, social background, or culture. By extending learning beyond traditional classroom walls, we can engage and inspire learners, build life skills, enhance academic achievement, and support well-being.

Days until the CLOtC National Conference 2025

 Real-world experiences build relevance and connections – to communities, society, and environment – that enhance academic achievement and celebrate difference, building links between people and between communities, and that develop a love of learning and a sense of belonging.

Join us at the CLOtC National Conference 2025 to explore how you can be empowered to take learning further, build strong connections with communities near and far, and make LOtC experiences more accessible, inclusive, impactful, and enriching for every young person.

What to expect

The CLOtC National Conference sees up to 300 delegates, including school leaders, teachers, educational professionals, LOtC practitioners and providers from across the UK, come together for a day of learning, sharing good practice, and networking. The programme will include inspiring keynote speakers who will engage and motivate the audience from the start and set the tone for the day ahead; practical and informative workshops led by experts and covering the breadth of learning outside the classroom giving attendees ideas they can implement as soon as they get back to their schools or setting; discussions; and plenty of networking opportunities.

Workshops for Schools

Jo Harris, Education Manager, Field Studies Council

Field Studies Council (FSC) is a leading provider of field trips and outdoor learning experiences.  FSC’s Education Manager will lead an interactive workshop exploring the hidden benefits of residential field trips beyond the traditional curriculum focus, and will delve into how these immersive experiences foster reflection, resilience, and strong relationships among students and staff.  Participants will explore the various ways to incorporate student reflection into activities and trips.  With practical ideas for building resilience and relationships this session will help create a tool kit for teachers to get the very best out of a residential.

James Petrucco and David Baker, Learning Workshop Leaders, The Roman Baths

This presentation from learning experts at The Roman Baths on using objects in the classroom and during museum visits offers some tips and tricks on how to use objects to understand the world, make objects central to the curriculum and how objects can work in a cross-curricular way to engage children with their learning.

Angela Willerton, Educational Visits Adviser, EVOLVE Advice

This workshop will focus on how to assess and reduce risks for educational visits in an appropriate and balanced way. Angela Willerton, Educational Visits Adviser, from EVOLVE Advice will undertake activities to identify potential hazards, establish their likelihood and implement measures to minimise the risks. They will introduce the Waltham Forest Schools & Colleges Climate Charter and discuss how they support schools to develop practical Climate Action Plans. The session will conclude with a small group activity aimed at exploring ways to inspire climate action beyond the classroom.

Suitable for both schools and providers.

Educational visits overseas can be a life-changing experience for young people and have a huge impact on building confidence, resilience, and relationships, as well as providing lasting memories. However, for teachers, these LOtC experiences require a bit more rigorous planning. This autumn, the European Union will be adopting new Entry and Exit Systems (EES) – at this session, Gill Harvey, CEO from School Travel Forum, will be offering information about these changes and some information on what will be required when going through passport control at ports and airports, and Graham Lodge, Outdoor Education Advisor, will be on-hand to offer practical advice for teachers and staff attending overseas visits.

Workshops for Providers

The workshop will help delegates to understand what ‘quality’ looks like and how a focus on quality can lead to improved outcomes for students.

Hilary Young, Learning Officer and Philippa Stevens, Director of Learning, Ely Cathedral

With increasing awareness of the needs of neuro-diverse students, providers need to find ways to help all students engage with and enjoy their spaces. Experts from Ely Cathedral will be exploring a range of sensory activities and resources that they use to help all learners feel confident and secure as they participate in purposeful experiences on school visits using all 5 senses. They will also be looking at ways in which sensory spaces can be used to support students with emotional needs during their visit. This will be an interactive workshop with lots of ideas and examples that can easily be applied to your setting.

Richard Pering. Senior Learning Manager, and Nicky Saunders, Learning Officer, The Royal Parks

In 2021, The Royal Parks launched its ambitious “Green Futures” project, inviting schools to bring an entire year group of KS3 and selected Y12 students out for practical conservation work three times across the year. Schools jumped at the opportunity for hands-on work that would enhance students’ wellbeing following Covid, but since then school priorities have been shifting. Join this workshop to:

  • find out how we engaged 200 teenagers in practical conservation work;
  • consider how in-depth interventions like this can adapt to the evolving education landscape;
  • share ideas on how LOtC experiences can influence students’ career choices.

During an immersive 5-day residential visit, Farms for City Children offer young people the chance to participate in producing, harvesting, cooking and serving food to share with each other around the dinner table. The simple hands-on, practical nature of this experience allows children to gain a deeper connection to their food and supports them to make the link between good nutrition and their health and wellbeing.

At this workshop, Farms for City Children farm school leaders will share their experiences of how children respond to this offer and present the outcomes they have observed. Delegates will be invited to share their ideas and experiences of offering experiential learning opportunities – related to growing, farming, food or wider – and the positive impacts they have seen or evaluated. The group will then reflect on how these ideas can translate into a variety of different settings or activities to enable providers to support students to thrive as a result of the learning experiences offered.
