CLOtC hosts annual National Conference at the Royal Armouries Museum

On Wednesday 12 November 2025, the Council for Learning Outside the Classroom (CLOtC) held its annual National Conference at the Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds.

This year’s event, themed ‘Creating connections, engaging all, enriching lives’, welcomed more than 300 teachers, educators, and providers of learning outside the classroom (LOtC) from across the UK.

Attendees enjoyed a full programme of inspiring speakers, hands-on workshops, and dedicated networking sessions designed to bring together like-minded individuals and organisations.

Throughout the day, participants also had the chance to explore exhibitor stands showcasing a wide range of products and services to support the delivery of their LOtC. There was also a guided tour of the Royal Armouries, a proud LOtC Quality Badge holder.

Returning as host was TV presenter, explorer, National Geographic Pristine Seas Head of Expeditions, and LOtC Ambassador Paul Rose. In his opening remarks, he reflected on his own experiences and the powerful, lasting impact that LOtC can have on young people today.

Aligned with CLOtC’s mission to enable more children and young people to learn beyond the classroom—and thanks to support from conference sponsors PGL Beyond, Canal & River Trust, and Diverse School Travel—100 Yorkshire schools were able to attend free of charge to help develop their LOtC provision.

“I will be a better teacher next week as a result of coming to the conference.”

Suzanne Carter, Executive Headteacher at Gold LOtC Mark School Eastwood Academy, shared how integrating LOtC into whole-school  practice has transformed pupil outcomes, supported staff wellbeing, and strengthened community connections. Her contribution left the audience inspired and motivated to create meaningful change.

“I came away from the conference feeling so enthusiastic and motivated to make a difference — even if it starts with small changes. Who knows where we’ll be in a few years’ time!”

A policy update from the Department for Education provided valuable insights following the Curriculum and Assessment Review, reinforcing the vital role LOtC plays in supporting education and offering practical, evidence-based solutions to many of the challenges faced by schools and society today.

CLOtC’s newly appointed Chair of the Board of Trustees, Jim Burt, led a panel discussion with Suzanne Carter; Martin Campbell, Executive Principal, Meridian Trust; Jon Clarke, Senior Deputy Headteacher, Walsall Academy; and Tony Okotie, Director of Impact, BBC Children in Need, on tackling inequalities and scaling LOtC to reach all schools and settings. Reflecting on the discussion, Martin Campbell said:

“The research is indisputable. At a time when we have a mental health crisis, an attendance shortfall and students who are less connected with nature… Learning Outside the Classroom and Extending the Boundaries of Learning for every child must surely play a part in creating a sense of belonging.”

Workshops throughout the day allowed delegates to explore topics in more depth. Led by experts from all LOtC sectors, sessions covered a wide range of areas—from safeguarding, to mapping local learning areas, to planning inclusive school visits.

“A seamless conference yesterday with some fantastic workshops and speakers across the day.”

“Such a slick, professional event, lots of great conversations and the workshops felt really vibrant.”

The day concluded with a prize draw featuring a selection of exciting prizes, generously donated by a range of businesses and organisations, including tickets to a Premiership football match and a family weekend adventure break.

The CLOtC Conference remains a standout event for educators and LOtC providers. Dr Anne Hunt, CEO of CLOtC said:

“Through the sharing of ideas, insights, and powerful examples of LOtC’s impact, we can drive a genuine step change in how we enable all children and young people to thrive.”
