In 2013, the Council for Learning Outside the Classroom will ensure that more young people can experience high quality learning outside the classroom (LOtC) activities by increasing the training we offer to teachers and LOtC practitioners. An outline of the courses offered is below. Follow the links for further information and details of training dates.
Planning an LOtC Curriculum: CPD training
This half day training session is designed to support you in integrating LOtC across the curriculum and embedding LOtC into the everyday life of your school. The training will help you to understand the benefits of LOtC and how to use it most effectively to support outstanding teaching and help all pupils achieve their full potential. Read more.
LOtC – A framework for development
LOtC Mark is the first national accreditation for schools, nurseries and other educational establishments which recognises and supports the development of learning outside the classroom across all subject areas.
The training will help you to understand how to ensure that your school is strategically placed to develop excellent LOtC provision and work towards achieving LOtC Mark (Bronze). LOtC Mark supports whole school development, providing a structure within which to demonstrate your school’s strengths across all 4 key areas of the Ofsted inspection framework.

LOtC at the Early Years Foundation Stage
Most early years settings now operate free-flow between indoor and outdoor spaces, allowing pupils to participate in a range of activities. This course for EYFS practitioners looks at how to make the most of LOtC opportunities. Delegates will generate ideas for LOtC activities, assess which activities will be most beneficial for their pupils, and think about best practice when planning and doing LOtC. LOtC and the Ofsted Framework: Highlighting Success
This course will look at links between the Ofsted inspection framework and the benefits and outcomes of LOtC. It will help you to identify ways to highlight your existing LOtC practice, and look at how to improve what you are doing in order to demonstrate your outstanding practice to Ofsted. Meeting Curriculum Needs and Building Great Relationships with Schools – Training for LOtC Providers
In changing times, LOtC providers need to be able to adapt quickly to the changing curriculum and offer creative solutions that support schools in raising attainment, improving standards in teaching and narrowing the attainment gap. This half day training session will look at forthcoming curriculum changes and support providers in developing creative lessons and activity ideas that deliver learning outcomes across all areas of the curriculum. The course will also look at effective marketing strategies designed to cultivate long term relationships with school customers which support frequent, continuous and progressive LOtC provision. The course offers a fantastic opportunity to network and share ideas and best practice with providers from other sectors. Read more about Meeting Curriculum Needs.
