Simply Gardening for Schools

Monday 24 November 2008

Simply Gardening for Schools’ vision is to provide children with a structured, exciting, and powerful approach that changes not only what the children learn but how they learn it and where they learn it.

Headed by managing director and award winning gardener, John Cavill (www.simplygardening.co.uk) with his team of top Lincolnshire business people, they are looking to build two hundred school gardens in the Lincolnshire and Yorkshire areas within the next five years and significantly change the lives of over 200,000 children.

Practical engagement that inspires the children’s natural enthusiasm for the outdoors and eagerness to get their hands dirty will allow the simply gardening for schools’ team to involve children in all levels of kitchen gardens, wildlife areas, story telling areas, quiet gardens, science areas and much more.

Fabulous examples like the simple carrot, when grown in an inspiring and different way, has links to almost every subject in the curriculum and provides an exciting outside activity that is simple and fun to achieve, and of course in the end it can be eaten!

Nth Lincolnshire Council, Nth East Lincolnshire Council, Hull Council, Yorkshire Forward, Channel 7 TV, The Hull & Humber Chamber of Commerce, GSMG Media Group, Business Link, DCSF, MPs, and celebrities have recognised the difference that can be made with outside learning areas and are giving their full support to this project.

Alan Titchmarsh even said:
“Anything we can do to raise an awareness of the benefits and the importance of growing plants among children is hugely important.
Congratulations John and good luck!”

This is an exciting time for schools, teachers and children. High quality learning experiences outside the classroom are now being achieved and with the right funding, sponsorship and backing this can be carried forward in a massive way to give the children a better future and understanding of the world around them.
